The band began writing the album during the first Covid lockdown in 2020, taking their time to carefully shape the material rather than rushing a follow-up to their acclaimed debut. "We began the writing process for this album back in 2020 during the first Covid lockdown. Although it's been eight years since our first album, Spiritual Sickness, came out, we didn't want to rush a second release for the sake of it. We took our time, honed the songs, and we're very proud of what we've produced with Psalms of Filth. We think it's a strong step up in terms of both songwriting and production from Spiritual Sickness".
Musically, the album broadens the band's sonic palette while remaining deeply rooted in classic death metal. "There's still plenty of blasting death metal, but we wanted the songs to have a greater impact. Some tracks became more direct and aggressive, while others explore darker, doom-laden moods with melodic guitar lines, acoustic passages and more expansive arrangements. We wrote a huge amount of material before condensing everything down to eight songs that represent exactly where ZEALOT CULT is today. This is the next logical step for the band."
Visually, Psalms of Filth reunites the band with acclaimed Italian artist Paolo Girardi, whose striking artwork once again captures the bleak world inhabited by ZEALOT CULT. "We wanted Paolo back because he perfectly captures the atmosphere and themes behind our music. The central figure on the Psalms of Filth cover directly connects with the artwork from Spiritual Sickness, a fanatical religious extremist, a true 'Zealot', spreading death and destruction through a twisted spiritual crusade. That continuity was important to us".
Since emerging from the ashes of Limerick bands The Swarm and Victim-X in 2008, ZEALOT CULT have quietly become one of Ireland's most respected death metal exports. Their sold-out self-titled demo in 2010 laid the foundations, while the critically acclaimed Karmenian Crypt EP attracted international attention and earned a vinyl reissue through Sweden's Blood Harvest Records.
Their debut album, Spiritual Sickness, further cemented the band's reputation for combining the technical ferocity of the classic Floridian scene with the bleak atmosphere of early European death metal, earning praise from critics and fans alike for its crushing riffs, punishing rhythms and uncompromising intensity.
Away from the studio, ZEALOT CULT have shared stages with genre legends including Napalm Death, Possessed, Atheist and Pestilence, while becoming a cornerstone of Ireland's renowned Siege of Limerick festival.
With Psalms of Filth, the band have delivered an album that not only builds upon everything that made Spiritual Sickness such a critical success but pushes their songwriting, musicianship and sonic identity to a new level. It is darker, heavier, more dynamic and more confident than anything they have released before, a statement of intent from a band entering the strongest chapter of their career.
